Imperial Valley Family Law Resources

Navigating a family law matter is challenging enough on its own. Knowing where to turn for help — and understanding the local resources available to Imperial Valley residents — can make the process a little less overwhelming. Whether you are facing a divorce, a custody dispute, or a domestic violence situation, this guide highlights some of the key resources available in our community.

Imperial County Superior Court — Family Law Division

All family law cases in Imperial Valley are handled through the Imperial County Superior Court, located in El Centro. This is where divorce petitions are filed, custody orders are issued, and support obligations are established. The court’s self-help center offers basic guidance for those representing themselves, though having an experienced attorney significantly improves outcomes in contested matters.

Imperial County Department of Child Support Services

The Imperial County DCSS helps establish, enforce, and modify child support orders. If you are having difficulty collecting court-ordered child support, this agency has tools to enforce payment including wage garnishment, tax refund intercepts, and license suspensions. They can also assist with establishing paternity when needed.

Shelter From the Storm

For residents experiencing domestic violence, Shelter From the Storm provides emergency shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, and support services for victims and their children throughout Imperial County. Their services are confidential and available 24 hours a day.

24-Hour Crisis Hotline: (760) 352-7722

Imperial Valley Legal Aid

Low-income residents may qualify for free or reduced-cost legal assistance through Imperial Valley Legal Aid. They handle a range of civil matters including some family law issues. Income eligibility requirements apply.

California Courts Self-Help Resources

The California Courts website offers free self-help resources including court forms, instructional guides, and information about family law procedures. While these resources are helpful for understanding the process, they are not a substitute for personalized legal advice — especially in contested cases involving children or significant assets.

Mediation Services

California law requires parents to attempt mediation before a judge will rule on contested custody matters. The Imperial County Superior Court offers Family Court Services — a mediation program that helps parents reach custody and visitation agreements with the help of a neutral mediator. Mediation is often faster, less expensive, and less adversarial than going to trial.

Working With a Local Family Law Attorney

While the above resources provide valuable support, nothing replaces the guidance of an experienced local attorney who knows Imperial Valley’s courts, judges, and procedures. A family law attorney can help you understand your rights, avoid costly mistakes, and achieve the best possible outcome for your family.
